Kolibri é uma publicação anual da editora suíça Baobab Books que apresenta uma seleção de títulos lançados na Europa Germânica (Alemanha, Suíça e Áustria). A edição deste ano, referente à produção de 2015, inclui uma resenha da versão em alemão de "O fim da fila" – daí o gentil convite para que eu ilustrasse a capa (e o postal).

Kolibri is an annual publication by Swiss Baobab Books Publishing House that introduces a selection of titles released in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. This year edition concerns 2015 production and includes a review of "Eine Geschichte ohne Ende" ("The end of the line" Swiss version). That's why Baobab's team kindly invited me to illustrate the cover (and postcard).

Esses foram os dois festivais internacionais para os quais o curta "O fim da fila", baseado no livro de imagem homônimo, se classificou esse ano! 



Dirigida pelo ilustrador/animador William Côgo e produzida pelo Labareda Comunicação e Design, a animação foi exibida no Rio de Janeiro (outubro) e em São Paulo (novembro) pelo Anima Mundi, um dos maiores festivais de animação do mundo!

A estreia do filme porém se deu na longínqua Eslováquia, mais precisamente na BAB - Bienal de Animação de Bratislava, ainda em setembro.

These were the two international festivals in which the short animation "The end of the line", based on the homonym picture book, was selected this year!

Directed by the illustrator/animator William Côgo and produced by Labareda Comunicação & Design, the movie was exhibited in Rio de Janeiro (October) and São Paulo (November) as part of Anima Mundi, one of the most important international festivals in the world!

"THE END OF THE LINE" ANIMATED MOVIE!!

Após mais de dois anos de trabalho, incluindo algumas interrupções, o livro de imagem "O fim da fila" virou desenho animado!

Um piloto, ainda sem trilha, havia sido exibido em 2015 na Ilha de Nami, na Coreia do Sul, como parte da exposição sobre o livro. Agora está pronta a versão definitiva do curta animado: com trilha, sonoplastia e todos os retoques necessários no trabalho de animação e efeitos digitais.

Produzido pela equipe do Labareda Comunicação e Design, o curta teve a direção do experiente ilustrador e animador William Côgo. A trilha sonora original ficou a cargo do músico Pierre Jatobá Descaves, da Orquestra Sinfônica da UFRJ, que neste trabalho explora as sonoridades da flauta indígena. Um time de primeira!

Concluído com o apoio de vários amigos por meio de um financiamento coletivo (crowdfunding), o curta poderá ser assistido brevemente em diversos festivais nacionais e internacionais de animação.

After more than two years of development, the picture book "O fim da fila" (The end of the line) became an animated movie!

A model/sketche, even without a soundtrack, had been exhibited in 2015 in Nami Island, South Korea, as part of the book's expo. Now its definitive version is finally complete: with soundtrack, digital and sound effects and all necessary details of characters animation.

Produced by Labareda Communication and Design (Rio de Janeiro), the short movie had the direction of the expert illustrator/animator William Côgo. The original soundtrack was created by musician Pierre Jatobá Descaves – from Federal University of Rio de Janeiro Orchestra – which explores sounds of indigenous pipe in this work. Really a great team!

Finished with the support of some friends through a crowdfunding project, the animated movie will be submitted to several international animation festivals.

Mais um reconhecimento na ALEMANHA!

One more recognition in GERMANY!

Em 30 de maio foram anunciados "Os mais belos livros alemães do ano", seleção promovida pela entidade "Stiftung Buchkunst". Entre eles está a versão germânica de "O Fim da Fila" (Eine Geschichte Ohne Ende) – publicada pela editora suíça Baobab Books. O livro concorre ao prêmio máximo com outros quatro títulos na categoria Livro Infantil.

Esta seleção leva em conta todo o projeto do livro, inclusive sua impressão e acabamento, o que significa que a Baobab Books (http://www.baobabbooks.ch/) caprichou na produção – a edição é cartonada. Os vencedores de cada categoria serão conhecidos em setembro, um mês antes do anúncio do Prêmio Alemão de Literatura Infantil, no qual "O fim da fila" também concorre, porém na categoria Picture Book (Álbum Ilustrado) – ver post de 16/06/2016.  





On May 30th the "Most Beautiful German Books of the Year" award announced its selection. This prize is promoted by "Stiftung Buchkunst" and concerns the entire book project, including its printing and full term.

"Eine Geschichte Ohne Ende", the Swiss edition of "The end of the line" is nominated together with four other titles to the Children's Book category. The award winners will be known in September, one month before the "German Children's Literature Award" announcement (in which "The end of the line" is also nominated, in Picture Book category) – see the post from 16/06/2016.

"O FIM DA FILA" em Espanhol!

"THE END OF THE LINE" in Spanish!

Foi lançada no último mês de maio "Al final de la fila", a edição em espanhol do meu livro de imagem O fim da fila.

Produzido em capa dura pela Fondo de Cultura Económica (FCE) – editora mexicana reconhecida pela qualidade de seus títulos – o livro já pode ser encontrado em toda a América Latina e Espanha.

"El Fondo" é um poderoso grupo editorial vinculado ao governo mexicano e possui 27 livrarias no país, além de 10 filiais fora dele. Em maio inúmeros eventos promovem o lançamento de "Al final de la fila".

Muito feliz com mais esse vôo do livro, agora formatado para o público "hispanohablante". Sobretudo por ele fazer parte da coleção "Los especiales de a la orilla del viento", que inclui títulos de peso e publica os vencedores do concurso "La orilla del viento" para álbuns ilustrados (picture books).

“Al final de la fila”, the Spanish version of my image book “The end of the line”, was released last May.
The book was produced in hard cover by Fondo de Cultura Económica (FCE) – a Mexican publishing house recognized for its high quality titles – and can be found in Spain and all Latin America.

“El Fondo” is a powerful publishing group linked to the government of Mexico. It has 27 bookshops in the country and 10 headquarters abroad. "Al final de la fila" is been promoted through several events in May.

I’m very happy with this new “flight” of the book, now adapted for Spanish speakers. Mainly because it is taking part in the “Los especiales de a la orilla del viento" collection – which includes prestigious titles, some of them awarded by the "La orilla del viento" picture book contest.

"O FIM DA FILA" é finalista de prêmio literário na Alemanha!

"O FIM DA FILA" is nominated for German Literature Award!

German Children's Literature Award (Prêmio Alemão de Literatura Infantil, ou ainda "Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis") é o nome do mais importante prêmio alemão para livros infantis e juvenis, oferecido anualmente pela Association for Children's and Youth Literature, Seção alemã do IBBY.

Em março foram anunciados os finalistas da 60ª edição do prêmio (produção 2015) e "O fim da fila", recém-publicado por lá, está entre as seis obras selecionadas na categoria Picture Book (álbuns ilustrados). Os vencedores de cada categoria serão anunciados em outubro, durante a Feira do Livro de Frankfurt.

Já havia postado no facebook e aqui no blog informações e fotos da bela edição alemã do livro, publicada pela editora suíça Baobab Books e comercializada na Alemanha, Áustria e Suíça (detalhes abaixo).

Feliz pelo reconhecimento deste projeto autoral em terras germânicas, ele que já havia sido contemplado em 2012 na lista The White Ravens, da Biblioteca de Munique.

The "German Children's Literature Award" (Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis) is the most prestigious award for children’s and young adult’s literature in Germany. It is an annual prize granted by "The Arbeitskreis für Jugendliteratur" (Association for Children's and Youth Literature), the German IBBY Section.

Lat March were announced the nominated books for 2016 award and "O fim da fila" is one of the six books selected for the "Picture Books" category. The prizewinners will be announced on October 21, 2016, during the Frankfurt Book Fair.

I had already posted photos and information about the great German edition, published in 2015 by the Swiss "Baobab Books" publishing house. It can be found in Germany, Austria and Switzerland (details below).

I am very happy with the recognition of this self-authored project in German lands once it had already been selected for The White Ravens Catalogue (Munich International Library) in 2012.

Feeling very pleased with this indication and hoping the prizewinners annoucement!

V BOOK ILL FEST 2016 (Sérvia/ Serbia)

Em abril desse ano fui selecionado, ao lado dos também brasileiros Taline Schubach e Maurizio Manzo, para o V Festival de Ilustração "BOOK ILL FEST", organizado na Sérvia. Dentre aproximadamente 2.200 candidatos foram selecionados ao todo 141 ilustradores de literatura infantojuvenil, cujos trabalhos foram exibidos na Feira do livro de Novi Sad. Enviei ilustrações de "O fim da fila" e de "Estórias de jabuti", ambos publicados pela Rovelle.

Last April I was selected to the 5th edition of the "BOOK ILL FEST" International Illustration Contest (Serbia), togheter with the also Brazilian illustrators Taline Schubach and Maurizio Manzo. From about 2.200 candidates around the world only 141 illustrators were selected. The expo was held at the Novi Sad Book Fair. I sent them some illustrations from the books "O fim da fila" e "Estórias de jabuti", by Rovelle publishing house (Brazil).

NAMI CONCOURS 2015 - Parte II / Part II

5. A Exposição

Enquanto a pintura das tartarugas secava, fomos conhecer a sala especialmente projetada para expor os desenhos de “O fim da fila”. A grande surpresa é que não se tratava apenas de uma sala com ilustrações emolduradas na parede – o que já seria muito honroso. Era muito mais. Espalhados carinhosamente pelo espaço, os personagens do livro ganharam vida! Ao adentrarmos a sala era impossível não se encantar, tal o cuidado que a equipe de produção teve com cada detalhe. Estavam lá a onça, a tartaruga, o tucano, o Curupira... todos em grandes dimensões, moldados em barro pelos próprios artesãos do atelier de cerâmica de Nami, e pintados à mão com incrível capricho e fidelidade aos desenhos originais.

As paredes da sala foram tomadas pelas páginas do livro. O oco da árvore era um convite para as nossas cabeças e câmeras, enquanto no fundo da sala era exibida uma versão piloto do livro em desenho animado, produzida pelo meu amigo ilustrador William Côgo e sua equipe do Estúdio Labareda (RJ).

O belo projeto da sala foi criado pela Seh wa Park, designer do time do Nami Concours, muito embora toda a equipe tenha ajudado bastante na realização de cada detalhe. É de fato um trabalho coletivo, feito com extrema dedicação. Nos foi dito que a exposição ficará montada na biblioteca da ilha até os preparativos para o próximo concurso, em 2017.

Todos os premiados tiveram seus livros transformados em ambientes interativos – salas, cabines e corredores da Biblioteca de Nami – e o privilégio de adentrarem suas obras junto com o público. O resultado do trabalho ao vivo é fabuloso, sendo mais fácil mostrar as fotos do que tentar descrever. Era visível o orgulho, muito justo por sinal, de cada um dos envolvidos na produção e montagem da exposição.

Também era evidente a emoção de todos nós, ilustradores, vendo nossos trabalhos tão ampliados e valorizados. Tenho certeza de que cada autor presente* ficou imensamente feliz pela dedicação de toda a equipe do Nami Concours e do Nambook.

5. The Exhibition

While the painted turtles were drying, we visited the room in which the illustrations of “The end of the line” were displayed. However, there was a great surprise: we could see not only the framed artwork fixed on the wall, but much more! Carefully spread around the space, the book characters were almost alive! It was impossible not be enchanted by each detail of the fantastic atmosphere created in that special room. Produced in a big statue-like format, we could see  the jaguar, the turtle, the tucan and also the Curupira… all them made of clay by the artisans of Nami’s pottery atelier and painted with an incredible care and perfection.

The walls were taken by the book’s pages. The tree hole was an invitation for our heads and cameras, while at the end of the room an animated movie version of “The end of the line” was being shown. It was produced by William Côgo, my friend and also an illustrator, and his team of Labareda Studio from Rio de Janeiro.

The great booth design was developed in each detail by SeHwa Park, a Nami staff’s designer, together with all Nami’s team. It’s really a collective work, everybody worked hard and the results were very impressive. It was announced that the expo will be held at the Nami Island Library till the next contest edition.

All winners had their works transformed into interactive spaces, and they were able to enter their own universes with the public. To witness the Expo in person was so wonderfull and it’s easier to show photos than to try to describe it. We could also realize how proud of all Nami’s Team were with the Nami Concours Exhibition. Illustrators and all the guests were also deeply touched by seeing their books so respected and explored in all their potential. I am sure that each author there was extremely happy with the dedication and care of Nami Concours’ / Nambook’s team.

6. Cerimônias de abertura e premiação

Após tantas emoções pela manhã, o dia ainda reservaria aos ilustradores outro momento especial: a própria cerimônia de premiação. Diante de uma platéia de conceituados profissionais do livro e embaixadores de diversos países, subimos um a um para recebermos nossos prêmios das mãos da Presidente do Júri, Dra. Junko Yokota, e do idealizador e Presidente da República de Naminara, Mr. Kang Woo-hyon. Em meu discurso abordei o processo criativo de “O fim da fila”, sem esquecer de agradecer pelo carinho e respeito com que fui recebido.

No fim da tarde ocorreu o tradicional “Rice cake cutting”, ou seja, o corte da massa de arroz. Todos os participantes das cerimônias de abertura e premiação – organizadores, jurados, ilustradores, convidados especiais, equipe e público – formam uma enorme roda no pátio logo à frente do palco e, com luvas plásticas, seguram uma comprida e cilíndrica massa de arroz (uma espécie de macarrão grosso). Ao ouvirem as palavras de ordem “Nami Sum!” proferidas pelo patriarca, o simpático Mr. Minn, cada um deve apertar a massa com as mãos até cortá-la, comendo em seguida a parte que reteve. É um momento de total descontração.

À noite, um jantar ao ar livre celebrou o êxito da cerimônia de abertura de mais um Nambook e nos foi apresentado o vídeo oficial do evento*.

6. Opening and Award Ceremonies

After so many emotions in the morning, another special moment was in store for us illustrators: the award ceremony itself. In front of an audience composed of highly praised book professionals and ambassadors of several countries, we have received our awards from the President of the Jury, Dr. Junko Yokota, and from the creator and President of Naminara Republic, Mr. Kang Woo-hyon. In my speech I have dealt with the creative process of “O fim da fila”, and I have also thanked for the care and attention I received from all Nami team.

Later that afternoon we have taken part of the traditional “Rice cake cutting”, that is, the cutting of rice dough. All participants – organizers, members of the jury, illustrators, special guests, the Nami team and the public in general – gather round in a circle in front of the stage and hold (wearing gloves, of course) one long piece of rice dough, which looks like a very long and thick spaghetti. On hearing the command “Nami Sum!” uttered by the patriarch Mr. Minn, each one of the participants must squeeze the dough until it is ripped apart, and each person must eat  the piece of dough that is in his or her hands. It is a very cheerful moment.

In the evening, we have all celebrated the success of another Nambook opening ceremony during an open air dinner. The official video of the festival was shown at the time*.

7. Jeju e Tamnara

Nossa agenda incluiu ainda uma visita à Ilha de Jeju, entre a Coreia do Sul e o Japão, onde Mr. Kang nos levou para conhecer seu novo projeto: Tamnara, uma segunda “república” nos moldes de Naminara, bem menor que esta última. Tivemos a oportunidade de ver o início das obras que aos poucos transformam um terreno completamente pedregoso em mais um aprazível destino ecológico e cultural. A equipe de Tamnara é numerosa e trabalha duro, de modo que barrancos e pedras vão sendo convertidos rapidamente em caminhos, escadas e jardins.



As pedras de Jeju são vulcânicas e, portanto, macias para o entalhe. Boa parte delas já recebeu o toque artístico de Mr. Kang. Em vários cantos do futuro parque também pudemos ver rochas gravadas com o traço de Graça Lima, Mariana Massarani e Roger Mello, os amigos do “Capa Dura em Cingapura”, que estiveram juntos por lá em 2014 e deixaram sua marca inconfundível.

Nossa visita foi motivo de várias inaugurações em Tamnara, em especial a da grande surpresa da tarde: o castelo de Roger Mello, uma moderna construção à base de rocha e metal com várias referências à sua obra.

Passamos momentos maravilhosos também em Seul, tendo sempre ao nosso lado pessoas da equipe do Nami Concours, extremamente atenciosas e gentis. Conhecemos alguns de seus belos templos, palácios, bairros antigos e o centro comercial com seu excesso de letreiros luminosos. Mas isso já é outra história...

7. Jeju and Tamnara

Our schedule included a visit to Jeju Island, located between South Korea and Japan. Jeju is the birthplace of Mr. Kang’s new project: Tamnara, a second republic, very much like Naminara, however smaller. We had the opportunity to witness the beginning of the process that little by little transforms a totally stony soil into a very pleasant ecological and cultural site. Tamnara’s team works really hard in order to reshape stones and slopes into beautiful pathways, stairs and gardens.

Jeju Island is composed of volcanic rocks, which are very soft for engraving. Many of them have already received Mr. Kang’s artistic touch. In several places of the future park it is already possible to see rocks engraved with Graça Lima, Mariana Massarani and Roger Mello designs. These artists went there in 2014 and left their unmistakable mark.

Our visit was part of several opening ceremonies in Tamnara, and mainly of the great surprise of the afternoon: Roger Mello’s castle, a modern construction made of rocks and metal with several references to his artwork.

We have spent a wonderful time in Seoul, always accompanied by some of the members of Nami Concours Team, really kind and caring people. We’ve had the opportunity to visit some of the Korean finest temples, palaces, ancient neighborhoods and the city center, full of neon signs. But this is another story...

8. Conclusão

Encerro meu relato com enorme gratidão pelo reconhecimento obtido e pela oportunidade de conhecer tantas pessoas interessantes com importância ímpar no campo da literatura para crianças e jovens.

8. Conclusion

I am really grateful for the recognition of my work and for the opportunity of getting to know so many interesting people. People of unique importance involved with children’s and youth literature.

I’d like to thank Fred Minn, his brothers Kenny and Bobby, and his team for the passionate and wonderful work. We had a truly memorable experience thanks to you all.

My sincere thanks also to the Nami jury and to the IBBY representatives, who have enchanted illustrators with their generosity and friendliness.

Finally, many thanks to the Minn couple and to Mr. Kang for the warm welcome and for the initiative of creating a dream universe in a very special island.

Fingers crossed there will be more Brazilian illustrators in the next edition of Nami Concours!
