SINOPSE / SYNOPSIS
Num pequeno sítio próximo à mata vive um menino, só com os
pais e seu cão. Certo dia, atraído por uma borboleta, ele encontra nessa mata
uma misteriosa menina de longos cabelos.
A história se baseia numa lenda regional que conheci há muitos anos. É bastante popular no
interior do Nordeste brasileiro, mas quase desconhecida no restante do país.
A boy, his parents and a dog live in a small
ranch near the woods. One day, lured by a butterfly, the boy finds in this
forest a mysterious girl with long hair.
The story is based on a regional legend, very
popular in Brazilian Northeast countryside, but almost unknown to the rest of
the country.
The girl of the story, also known as “Flower of the Woods”, is a magical entity, a spirit of the woods.
A LENDA / THE TALE
Em algumas áreas rurais do Nordeste – principalmente nos
estados da Paraíba, de Pernambuco e do Ceará – o povo crê numa entidade
feminina que habita as matas e as protege. Ela tem muitos nomes, dependendo da
região: Comadre Florzinha (ou Fulozinha), Maria Florzinha, Caboclinha, ou ainda
Flor do mato.
Por vezes é descrita como adulta, mas nas histórias em
que a chamam de Flor do mato tem sempre a aparência de uma menina. Traiçoeira,
pode tanto ajudar como prejudicar as pessoas que, por algum motivo, adentram a
mata sem lhe pedir a devida licença. Há relatos de caçadores e seus cães
atacados pelos longos e poderosos cabelos da “Florzinha”. Por via das dúvidas,
às vezes lhe deixam um pouco de fumo, mingau ou mel.
Os mais antigos contam que a Flor do mato gosta de atrair
crianças para a parte mais profunda da mata. Dizem que algumas delas nunca mais
voltam.

In some of the Brazilian northeast rural areas – mainly in the states of Paraíba, Pernambuco and Ceará – people believe in a female entity that inhabits the woods and protects them. She has many names, depending on the region: "Comadre Florzinha" (Little Flower Godmother), "Maria Florzinha" (Little Flower Mary), "Caboclinha", or "Flor do Mato" (Flower of the woods).
She is sometimes described as an adult, however, in the stories in which she is called Flor do Mato she always looks like a girl. Treacherous, she can either help or hinder people who, for some reason, enter the woods without her permission. There are reports about hunters and their dogs being attacked by 'Little Flower’ long and powerful hair. They sometimes offer her some porridge or honey just in case.
The elders say that Flower of the woods likes to lure children into the deepest part of the woods. They say some of them never come back.
I only know that at the age of fourteen, when I first read one of her stories written by Herberto Sales, I fell under her spell.
O ESTILO / THE STYLE
As ilustrações desse livro se inspiram na estética do
“Maracatu rural”, manifestação cultural com forte presença no interior do
estado de Pernambuco.
Os grafismos do Maracatu, principalmente os dos trajes do
personagem “Caboclo de lança”, são formados por estampas florais e arabescos
multicoloridos, de grande personalidade e impacto visual.

This book’s illustrations are inspired by the aesthetics of the "Maracatu rural", a cultural event with a strong presence in Pernambuco state's countryside.
The graphics of Maracatu, specially the costumes of the character "Caboclo de lança", are composed by floral prints (or patterns) and multicolored arabesques, with strong personality and visual impact.
