"A FLOR DO MATO", meu segundo livro de imagem

"A FLOR DO MATO" (FLOWER OF THE WOODS), my second picture book

A butterfly, a flower, a spell... from the deep woods there comes a mysterious call.

SINOPSE / SYNOPSIS

A boy, his parents and a dog live in a small ranch near the woods. One day, lured by a butterfly, the boy finds in this forest a mysterious girl with long hair.

The story is based on a regional legend, very popular in Brazilian Northeast countryside, but almost unknown to the rest of the country.

The girl of the story, also known as “Flower of the Woods”, is a magical entity, a spirit of the woods.

A LENDA / THE TALE

In some of the Brazilian northeast rural areas – mainly in the states of Paraíba, Pernambuco and Ceará – people believe in a female entity that inhabits the woods and protects them. She has many names, depending on the region: "Comadre Florzinha" (Little Flower Godmother), "Maria Florzinha" (Little Flower Mary), "Caboclinha", or "Flor do Mato" (Flower of the woods).

She is sometimes described as an adult, however, in the stories in which she is called Flor do Mato she always looks like a girl. Treacherous, she can either help or hinder people who, for some reason, enter the woods without her permission. There are reports about hunters and their dogs being attacked by 'Little Flower’ long and powerful hair. They sometimes offer her some porridge or honey just in case.

The elders say that Flower of the woods likes to lure children into the deepest part of the woods. They say some of them never come back.

I only know that at the age of fourteen, when I first read one of her stories written by Herberto Sales, I fell under her spell.

O ESTILO / THE STYLE

MIGRATIONS - Open hearts, open borders

HELP MAKE THIS BOOK FLY!

I have received a catalog of the traveling exhibition Migrations, a beneficent project for which I sent two illustrations in 2017. The exhibition, a great initiative of ICPBS - International Center for the Picture Book in Society, University of Worcester (UK), was set up by postcards created by illustrators from around the world – necessarily with pictures of birds. It aims to bring, through the images and phrases created, some reflections about immigration, as well to raise funds for immigrant support programs.
Respecting the horizontal format of the postcards, the catalog shows a selection from the many works sent – making me honoured with the inclusion of one of my images. Roger Mello, a wonderful Brazilian artist, is also there.
Exhibited at the Biennials of Nami and Bratislava, Migrations continues to fly freely around!! Thanks, Piet Grobler, for the important invitation, and David Ross, for sending the publication.

Below, an article about the project from "The Guardian" and the link to buy the catalogue by Amazon.

"O FIM DA FILA" PELO MUNDO!

"THE END OF THE LINE" AROUND THE WORLD!

Seven years after its publication, "The end of the line" has travelled around the world taking a playful challenge to children, young people and adults of different cultures: where is this line going to??

It's a great pride and gladness to see the thoughtless space obtained by this project: international awards, foreign editions and two alternative unrollings – an incredible conceptual exhibition in Korea and an animated short film, screened in more than fifteen countries.

People say that oeuvre sets free from the author, getting an own life and following its ways by itself. I couldn't wish more!

FEIRA INTERNACIONAL DO LIVRO DE XANGAI 2016 - Uma experiência brasileira na China!

SHANGAI INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN'S BOOK FAIR 2016
A Brazilian experience in China!

Among Volnei Canonica, lecture promoter of Quindim Group, and the authors Roger Mello, Mariana Massarani, Graça Lima and Marina Colasanti – a real gift to take part of this group of wonderful professionals of Brazilian Children's Literature!

More than one year later, I finally bring some pictures of Brazilian delegation's visit to Shangai Children's Book Fair – a great experience among Vonei Canonica, Mariana Massarani, Graça Lima, Marina Colasanti e Roger Mello. In 2016 the Fair presented the "I International Festival of Brazilian Children's Literature" – reason of our journey –, promoted by Quindim Lecture Center. Our mission also included visiting Chinese schools and the presence at the Chen Bochui International Children's Literature Award ceremony.
